Welcome to Scituate Little League!

Summer Travel Baseball

A more competitive summer baseball program for players ages 8–17 who are ready for a higher level of commitment, competition, and team play.

Program Overview

Summer Travel Baseball is a more competitive level of play than the spring season. Teams play against towns around the South Shore from late June through early August. Most teams play approximately two games per week, though schedules may vary by league and age group.

Games are typically scheduled Monday through Friday. Most age groups also participate in a weekend tournament. Practices are held at least once per week and are scheduled at the discretion of the coaching staff.

How Summer Teams Are Formed

Summer Travel team construction is different from the spring season. In the spring, every player is guaranteed a spot on a team, and SLL works to balance teams for competitive play.

For summer, SLL follows each summer league’s age and eligibility rules when creating and entering teams. SLL’s goal is to find a Summer Travel team for every interested player, but depending on registration numbers, that may not always be possible.

Summer Travel requires a higher degree of commitment and places a greater emphasis on winning relative to spring baseball. Playing time may be uneven. By signing up for Summer Travel, families agree to that understanding.

Commitment note: Summer Travel is a relatively intensive program when practices and games are included. SLL understands that summer is vacation season and makes modest allowances for family vacations without jeopardizing a player’s roster spot.

Longer vacations should be reserved for later in August when the season has ended. This commitment is especially important for Little League International baseball tournaments, which have strict roster requirements.

Questions about the commitment level can be directed to [email protected].

Little League International Tournaments

After the spring regular season, Little League International conducts six baseball tournaments:

  • 8- to 10-Year-Old Division Tournament
  • 9- to 11-Year-Old Division Tournament
  • Little League Baseball Tournament
  • Intermediate (50/70) Division
  • Junior League Tournament
  • Senior League Tournament

Selection to each Tournament team is based on the ages outlined on the Little League Baseball Divisions page and the Tournament Eligibility page.

IMPORTANT NOTE: With the exception of the Senior League Tournament, players must participate in SLL Spring Baseball to be eligible for a Little League Tournament team. Please review the Tournament Eligibility page for more information.

Player Evaluations / Tryouts

There will be player evaluations/tryouts for three age groups. Evaluations will be held on Saturday, May 16 or Sunday, May 17. Specific time and location details will be shared closer to the evaluation dates. Evaluations are run by coaches from other divisions to ensure fair and impartial input. Spring coaches will also provide midseason evaluations to help inform team placement. All of this information will be used in the process of selecting Little League Tournament Teams and Summer Teams for 10U, 11U, and 12U.

8-Year-Old Baseball Players

SLL 8-year-old players participate in the Friendship League. Depending on the level of interest, one team or two equal teams will be formed.

The Friendship League is a long-established Eastern Massachusetts summer travel baseball league designed specifically for 8-year-old players. The goal is to help players develop their baseball skills and introduce young players, managers, coaches, and families to Summer Travel baseball in a competitive but friendly environment.

More than 60 teams participate in the league across the East Conference, based out of Braintree, and the West Conference, based out of Foxboro. Team rosters must consist of 12–15 players. Teams play eight regular-season games against surrounding towns.

Tentatively, the summer season will start the week of June 15. Scituate will have four home games and four away games per team. Scituate is in the East Conference and plays against teams from the South Shore.

  • Divisions will be organized on a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule.
  • A weekend game may be necessary to avoid scheduling games on or around July 4.
  • Playoffs tentatively begin the week of July 20.
  • The championship game is scheduled for early August.
  • All teams qualify for the playoffs.
  • Dates are subject to change based on the Friendship League Rules page.
  • Makeup games may need to be held on a weekend.
  • Practices will be held once or twice per week. If games are Monday/Wednesday, practice will be Tuesday/Thursday, and vice versa.

9- to 12-Year-Old Baseball Players

There are two summer baseball leagues on the South Shore for 9- to 12-year-old players: Colonial Baseball Summer League and South River Baseball League.

Depending on the level of interest, one or two teams will be formed per age group. If there are not enough players in one age group to form a full team, SLL may consider combining two age groups to form a team for that group of players. These teams have played in the South River Baseball League in past summers.

Leagues typically schedule 10 regular-season games and conduct playoffs. Leagues make every attempt to avoid games on Saturday and Sunday, but makeup games due to weather may require weekend play.

Colonial Baseball Summer League

This newly formed league includes teams from the Boston area to the South Shore. Teams will play half of their games in Scituate, and the other half “away” in nearby South Shore towns. The season concludes with a playoff tournament in early August.

Important Dates:

  • First week of June: Teams will start practicing

  • June 15th: first week of league games

  • Scituate teams will have 2 games and 1-2 practices per week

  • Early August: playoff tournament

These dates are subject to change based on weather and District 8 Tournament dates.

South River Baseball League

Last year, divisions were broken down as follows:

46/60 Fields

  • Evan Tanguay: 8- and 9-year-old players
  • Minor Division: 10-year-old players
  • Richard Gallagher: 11- and 12-year-old players
  • Major Division: 12-year-old players on 46/60 fields

50/70 Fields

  • Shaun Gallagher 50/70: 12A, 11A, and 11–12

Important Dates:

The season will begin in early July and run through the start of August.

Each team makes the playoffs, which begin in early August.

13- to 17-Year-Old Baseball Players

South River Baseball League is the summer home for 13-, 14-, 15-, 16- and 17-year-old players. If there are enough players in a particular age group to form a team, SLL will evaluate whether to combine two age groups to form a team for that group.

South River Baseball League

Teams play on 60/90 diamonds.

  • Junior Division: 13- and 14-year-olds
  • Senior Division: 14- to 17-year-olds
NOTES: Tryouts may be held for the Senior Division team if registration numbers warrant it. The South River teams may also collaborate with Scituate's American Legion team, with some potential crossover between the rosters. More information will be announced when it's available.

Important Dates

The season will begin in early July and run through the start of August.

Each team makes the playoffs, which begin in early August.
