Simple 10–12U Coaching Approach
For Little League-aged players:
- Assign one infielder responsibility for the runner. (lefty batter = 2b / righty batter = SS)
- Keep normal defensive depth.
- Have the fielder creep toward the bag as the pitcher gets set.
- Practice:
- steal coverage
- tags
- feeds
- catcher throw timing
At that age, clean fundamentals usually matter more than complicated pickoff systems.
You don’t “hold” the runner the same way a first baseman holds a runner at first. Instead, you:
- keep the runner within a manageable lead
- fake coverage occasionally
- break toward the bag as the pitcher comes set
- Then hustle back to your position when the ball is pitched
Pickoff Plays at Second
Daylight Play
Common at older levels:
- Middle infielder breaks to the bag when the runner takes an aggressive lead.
- Pitcher spins and throws.
Risk:
- bad timing opens holes in the infield
- missed tags can advance the runner
Inside Move
Right-handed pitcher:
- lifts leg like going home
- rotates and throws to second
- Useful to see if a team is going to bunt
Needs practice because balks are common if mechanics are inconsistent.
