Summer Travel Softball
A more competitive summer softball program for players who are ready for a higher level of commitment, competition, and team placement.
Important Overview
Summer Travel Softball is more competitive than in-town Spring Softball and is designed for players looking to improve and advance. A higher level of commitment is expected. There may be more practices, attendance matters, playing time is not guaranteed, and tryouts are held.
Our goal is to roster as many players as possible, but not all players who register will necessarily make a team.
About Scituate Summer Travel Softball
This year, Scituate Summer teams will participate in both the Little League Tournament and the South Shore Softball League (SSSL).
These programs use different age-determination systems. In practice, this means a player may be eligible for one age group in SSSL and a different Little League Tournament division.
Age Eligibility
The two programs use different cutoff dates to determine a player’s age group:
Registration note: During registration, you’ll be prompted to register based on your daughter’s Little League age. If her age group differs between the two systems, which is common with fall birthdays, we can place her in the correct SSSL division manually. Questions? Contact [email protected].
Evaluations
Evaluations will be held Saturday, May 16 or Sunday, May 17. Specific time and location details will be shared closer to the evaluation dates.
Evaluations are run by coaches from other divisions to ensure fair and impartial input. Spring coaches will also provide midseason evaluations to help inform team placement.
Little League Tournament
Little League Tournament play begins in mid-June against other District 8 towns. For the three older divisions, District winners advance to Sectionals, then States, with the goal of reaching the Little League World Series.
Games are hosted on a rotating basis among District 8 towns, so local travel is expected. Please review the Little League Tournament player eligibility requirements.
Little League Tournament Divisions
- 8–10 Year-Old Division
- 9–11 Year-Old Division
- Majors Division — 10–12 year-olds
- Junior Division — 12–14 year-olds
- Senior Division — 13–16 year-olds
Additional details on Little League Softball divisions can be found here.
South Shore Softball League
The South Shore Softball League runs divisions from 8U through 18U. Each team plays a 10-game regular season, generally two games per week, and must qualify for the playoffs.
SSSL age groups are based on USA Softball age, which is how old your daughter was on August 31, 2025. This generally aligns with grade level.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Little League Tournament? Does it overlap with SSSL?
Little League Tournaments begin in mid-June against District 8 towns. For the three older divisions, district winners advance to Sectionals, then States, with the goal of reaching the Little League World Series in August in North Carolina. So yes, there is potential that if a team advances out of Districts, there could be overlap with SSSL — what a great problem that would be!
Do you have to play SSSL in order to compete in the Little League Tournament? Or vice versa?
No. While we expect these teams to largely overlap, there is no requirement for players to opt into both.
How are the teams selected?
Roster decisions are made in three steps:
- Division coordinators provide an initial recommendation based on all available evaluation data, including spring, midseason, and summer evaluations.
- The head coach makes a final proposal.
- The player agent and a small board committee review the roster to confirm that it reflects a fair evaluation of the eligible players.
I have a vacation planned. Does that impact my ability to play Summer Travel?
Potentially. Our goal is to roster the most competitive and committed team possible at each level. If a player will miss a significant portion of the season, a coach may choose to offer that roster spot to another player. This is especially relevant for Little League Tournament teams and weekend tournament teams, where roster sizes are smaller and player availability is critical.
That said, it’s summer — we understand that families have vacations planned. Most coaches will roster enough players to account for a reasonable number of absences. We simply ask that families communicate any known conflicts upfront so teams can be built accordingly.
Do players have to attend evaluations?
If a player would like to be considered for Summer Travel, every effort should be made to attend evaluations.
However, we understand that unavoidable conflicts arise. In those situations, coaches and coordinators may make alternative arrangements, which could include a second evaluation opportunity and/or relying on spring season and in-season evaluation data.
If your player cannot attend evaluations, please contact your division coordinator as early as possible.
If my player does not make a team, do I get refunded?
We make every effort to find a spot for as many players as possible, but due to registration numbers and roster size limites, unfortunately, sometimes we do need to make cuts. In those cases, you will be refunded your registration fee.
Are there other softball options besides Summer Travel?
At this time, there are no finalized plans for Summer In-Town Softball.
Last year, summer softball programming was organized through the Recreation Department. Our current priority is finalizing Summer Travel teams, as those leagues operate on firm registration and roster deadlines.
Once those teams are established, SLL will work with the appropriate organizations and volunteers to determine whether a summer in-town option is feasible.
