Lead-Offs Are Allowed in 50/70 Baseball

On most 46/60 fields:

• Runners must stay on the base until the ball crosses home plate.

On 50/70:

• Runners can take leads before the pitch.

• They can steal anytime once the pitcher is engaged.

• Pickoff moves become important.

This changes everything:

• Pitchers must hold runners.

• Catchers need quicker throws.

• Middle infielders learn covering responsibilities.

• Base runners need lead technique and reads.

Situational Awareness

• 1st and 2nd Lead off the back of the base.

• Return to the back of the base by diving or with your foot.

• 2nd base - remember 2 out lead is 2 big steps back to get a better angle to round 3rd

• 3rd base - down in foul - back in fair

  • Stay in foul territory to avoid getting hit by a batted ball.

  • When the ball hits a runner in fair territory they are out

  • Back in fair blocks the catchers view to the base.
